EPCΛD were appointed by DevelopmentWA to provide a landscape masterplan for both the lease sites and the Central User Facility at the Australian Automation and Robotic Precinct. This site is situated within the depleted, rugged terrain of a disused quarry, and our goal was to transform this harsh, exposed environment into a resilient, green space that supports the precinct’s mission as a national hub for technological advancement.
The brief called for the creation of a central outdoor space where ideas could be shared, visitors welcomed, and industry groups briefed in comfort—despite the often unforgiving climate. By prioritising shade, native planting, and passive cooling strategies, we created a landscape that both celebrates its raw quarry heritage and brings new life and ecological function to the site.
The shade structure, a focal point of the design, draws direct inspiration from the robotic technologies developed and tested within the precinct. Their form evokes the dynamic reach and precision of robotic arms, subtly linking the landscape to the cutting-edge innovation happening all around it.
This sculptural element not only provide critical shelter but also serve as icons of the precinct’s identity—fusing technology with environmental responsiveness.
The predominantly native planting palette was carefully selected to withstand local conditions while softening the industrial surroundings, creating an inviting, green heart that supports collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in equal measure.
