Lake Treeby is a medium scale, new community development in Treeby, situated on a former brickworks site.
EPCΛDs approach to this challenging project was based on gaining a comprehensive understanding of the significant constraints and issues of a despoiled area of industrial land. The brief originally required us to be innovative, bringing new ideas to redevelop a degraded brownfield site. Rather than design, we were to think in terms of a focus on community development and environmental integration.
The project required that we create a community that had as its focus, a park system that enabled, encouraged and sustained wellbeing. EPCΛD therefore developed strategies that embedded health and wellbeing into spatial design outcomes. Spaces are designed for diverse recreational needs, with interconnected circuits encouraging movement. The community tree initiative has created a focal feature, that fosters a sense of belonging and a lasting legacy of community ties.
EPCΛDs role was to guide a landscape led approach and as such we were also appointed as “placemakers” developing the brief and strategies for community development and ongoing engagement. EPCΛD established a clear vision that led the masterplan, and we maintained stewardship of that vision throughout the process and continue to do so at every stage.
A landscape strategy balancing environmental remediation, historical recognition, and contemporary community needs was adopted. Vegetation and lake retention, urban water management, and repurposing site-won materials were key sustainable strategies. This development has transformed a once-degraded landscape, shaped by brick manufacturing and sand extraction, into a vibrant, integrated parkland that is fully connected to the growing community.
