This major civic and river improvement project lies at the heart of the town of Pinjarra. EPCΛD were appointed to prepare concepts, work through an option review process with the community, developing detailed designs and full documentation.
The key public space and river foreshore is being redeveloped to include elements that reflect the cultural heritage of the place and present the adjacent heritage buildings. The square now provides lawns and shaded seating areas, improved pathways and lighting, a small-scale amphitheatre with stage, public art and Aboriginal interpretation as well as improved water accessibility through the construction of a jetty for non-motorised vessels.
The designs provide integration with associated works and/or proposals for adjoining George Street heritage properties including the Exchange Hotel and Police Station. The redevelopment will enhance the character of Pinjarra, ensuring a visual and physical connection to the river form the main street and civic heart. It is designed to encourage activity, longer visitation and a diverse range of formal and informal activities including events in both the square and foreshore areas.
The project was subject to extensive community engagement and specifically key workshops with Traditional Owners to ensure that all cultural and heritage was reflected within the proposals. A consensus was achieved and the park is being implemented with local skill based involvement.
The project is supported by the State Government’s Regional Grant Scheme and Local Projects Local Jobs Grant Scheme, Lotterywest, Peel Development Commission and Alcoa.
