EPCΛD was part of the Design Team led by Geoffrey Clough of Peter Hunt and Daryl Jackson Architects for this project which at the time was controversial as there was no common support for the retention of this classic building.
EPCΛDs role was to integrate car parking within the heritage setting, resulting in a completely underground car park and the recreation of parts of Stirling Gardens over the top. Research as to the historic plans, plan collections and stories resulted in a blend of modern and historic gardens that are seamlessly connected. The classic glass fountains were reconstructed in contemporary acrylic materials and the frontage onto the Terrace recreated over the underground car park.
The Heritage Council of Western Australia recommended listing of the building on 17 November 2006. The building was entered as a permanent entry on the Heritage Register on 8 December 2006.
